About the Saturday Softball League

Episode IV–A New League

Graham Mackenzie moved to Portland, OR on Jan 2, 2009. He moved into a house a block away from Billy Ray’s in the NE. He asked about joining Billy Ray’s softball team, but learned it was defunct. He later found out that the only way it would become un-defunct is by volunteering to manage the team, so he did that. Then he found out the league Billy Ray’s used to play on was, like, waaaaay full, so he decided to start another bar league that plays on Saturdays. He was able to convince The Florida Room/Red Fox, The Lutz Tavern/Clubhouse Bar & Grill, Vincente’s Pizza, The Cricket Cafe, Whole Foods, The Standard and The Kenton Club to join him. Everyone’s been having mad fun since then. The End…of the first chapter.

Episode V–The Commissioner Strikes Back (well not really)

After three seasons of stellar leadership, Graham stepped down as commissioner following the 2011 season.  Randy Belston was elected the new commissioner for 2012.  Randy grew up in NW Montana and came to Portland in 2004 for a job with the City.  In 2010, he was one of the founding members of the Slims SSL team and still plays and coaches for them.  A long-time baseball player with a trashed right shoulder to show for it, Randy brings a lifetime of baseball knowledge to the commissioner position, which he hopes translates into effective softball league leadership.  Now we’re all caught up!  The End…for now.

2010: We have expanded to 12 teams this year. Woo hoo! We welcome Amnesia Brewing, Beulahland, The B-Side, Club 21 and Slim’s to our ranks. Welcome, everyone!

2011: We are still at 12 teams for this season, but this year it’s Beulahland, Billy Ray’s, B-Side, Club 21, Florida Room, Kenton Club, Red Flag, Roadside Attraction, Ship Ahoy, Slim’s, The Standard & Vincente’s Pizza. Also, the League is very proud to announce that this season is sponsored by Miller High Life and New Belgium Brewing. Thanks, guys!

2012: We voted to stay with the same 12 teams this year and are gearing up for Opening Day on May 5th, once again at beautiful Pier Park.  In order to get ready for the new season, April 14th is Spring Training day at Kenton Park.  Starting at 2 pm we’ll do an hour or so of practice drills to shake the rust off, then choose up sides for a league-wide pick up game (or two).  Hope to see you there!
